Just enough to win

Premier League: Newcastle 2-1 Southampton

Southampton came home empty-handed from their game against Newcastle after losing 2-1. It was not to be the expected clear win for Newcastle, but a victory eked out over the course of the game.

Newcastle fielded the same line-up as the last time they took to the pitch.

The first half ended without incident. Newcastle took Clark off the pitch before the second half began, replacing him with Schär. Ings drove the ball home for Southampton, making the score 1-0, in the 52nd minute. Shelvey scored with a header in the 68th minute, taking the score to 1-1. Fernandez sank the ball into Southampton 's net in the 87th minute. Newcastle finished the game with a 2-1 victory.

Host club sit in the middle of the table, having compiled 19 points in 13 games. Newcastle have racked up five wins, four losses, and four draws. Newcastle have lived up to expectations recently, gaining 11 points in their most-recent five games.

Southampton should be looking to shore up their defence, given that they have let in an average of 2.43 goals per game this season. Southampton have only managed to bring home five points from their games on the road. Gaining nine points from 14 games has led Southampton to the undesirable position of being at risk of relegation. The defence of Southampton can be deemed, at best, to be 'shaky'. But the most-honest assessment would be that it has been utterly deficient, given they have conceded 34 goals in the course of the season. Southampton have lost nine times this season. And so, with just two wins coupled with three draws, the outlook is decidedly gloomy. Southampton have managed to gain only four points in their last five games.

Newcastle find themselves tested next by Burnley. Southampton are up the same day against West Ham United.
